And then I discovered that I made the blocks too big to fit - by 1/2 an inch. That's too much to fudge - I actually do need seam allowance :0(
So while I ponder what to do with it (I'm open to suggestions) I thought I'd post this picture I took while in Toronto last weekend. I was walking around the University of Toronto and spied this pot of hollyhocks on the side of a brick building. 
Why do they not put things like this on buildings anymore? Happy Quilting!

I would add a strip of pink to each side of the beige fabric , maybe even trim it down so there is at least 1/2 inch showing on each side
then I would bind it in the same pink

I like Kathie's idea about adding the pink strips. What a great find on the brick building. I can picture that done in applique.
I would trim off some off the sides of the applique block and add a strip to each side. Seems like great minds think alike,lol
I would have fudged it somehow and ruined the whole thing. And that's why I don't quilt. When you sew clothing or purses, a 1/4" doesn't matter so much.
That wall of hollyhocks is wonderful! I know you want to applique it! Your project is turning out so darling! Little side strips is a good quilty solution! Or even little squares!
I was going to type out my suggestion but it is the same as Kathie's.LOL. As for the buildings all I can say is I wish they still did. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Definitely add borders! although I would cut it so that the border is the same width as one small square of you block.
