a finish and a question

I finished machine quilting a new table runner for my coffee table.  I'm always happy to finish up with machine quilting - its not my favorite...
I did very basic quilting - straight lines I can use my walking foot to do.
Here is on the coffee table.  It does a very good job of covering up the dents, holes and marker scribbles of the last 15 years.  It is lighter than the other one I made for this table -it should be good for spring and summer.
I had a hard time choosing binding. I almost used a dark brown to frame it a bit but in the end I decided on this fairly solid red.  I just barely had enough.  This was a good project for using up last bits and pieces.
I really, really wanted to start something new but...  this quilt has been calling my name again.  I would really like to finish it - its been a ufo for a long time.  Yesterday I pulled it out and added the outer row of sashing and corner posts.  Most of it was even already cut.  I need to push through with this one and finish it while I still like it.

Unfortunately, I don't really like the fabric I bought for the border anymore.  (This picture doesn't show it very well)   Its just too yellow for my liking.  I also think it needs something more for a border than just a wide plain border.  A row of hst's or zigzags made with flying geese - something fairly simple.  What do you think this quilt needs for a border?  Any thoughts?  I'd be happy for any advice you have to offer.  Thanks!

Happy Quilting!

Love the runner for your coffee table ... I think the red binding is a fabulous choice! The other quilt ... what pattern is that? I love it! I am partial to a flying geese border.

your runner turned out great. I love picking out bindings but it often takes quite a bit of time!

As far as your borders, I think I agree about the fabric. Not enough bang. I like the idea of a pieced border. Of course, an applique' border would be over the top. Maybe even a beautiful colorful fabric, like flowers.
I know you'll come up with a winning answer.

Turned out great. I really like star quilts.

I like the border fabric, if you planned on adding a lot of applique, but not for a plain border. I think if you could find a print with a multitude of colors that are in the blocks, it would look great. It is a beautiful center. Love your table runner too!

That's one well "dressed" coffee table! Lovely.
I'm sure your border choice will be great.

Your table runner turned out lovely. Glad you had just enough fabric for the binding. The center of your next quilt project is beautiful, but I agree, the original border looks too plain unless you were going to quilt the heck out of it. I can envision a light background multicolored floral print for the border. Something that ties the colors together without wanting to be the star. I'm sure you'll find the perfect idea.

First off, pretty quilt! I agree the border fabric is too light. I would add a scalloped border of a darker print that is one of the colors in the block.

how about applique...simple vine with flowers and you could keep the border fabric you have already chosen. If doing a pieced border how about a zig zag type border? Sure it will be beautiful no matter how you do it.

What about a border with 2 rows of flying geese segments--pointy tips facing so that there is a light square running down the center. Not sure what the name of that border style is, but it would be a strong finish especially in your blues? I'm sure there are lots of ideas to consider.:) Great table runner. Amazing how they dress up our furniture so quickly!

I agree with you on the border fabric. It doesn't do the top justice. Personally, I like big prints for borders. I like to add corner blocks and I think it would be fun to take one quarter of the block (just one lily) and use it as a corner block in each corner, that would make the width just about right too. I love this top!
